Doebler Farm in 2008 Klydel Wetlands

The following link takes you to a page for the Citizens for a Green North Tonawanda. They have been active in preserving Wetlands in NT. Some of these wetlands are part of the old Doebler farm. This was referred to as the muckland by the Doebler farmers. The map on their website shows Doebler Drive, as well as the Wetland Preserve limits.

Doebler Ruie Road Farm

Walter J. Doebler who lived on the farm for several years as a youth, said the Doebler homestead farm consisted of 20 Acres situated on each side of Ruie Road. A North Tonawanda 1908 City Atlas depicts two parcels of land owned by M. Doebler (Mary, William F. Doebler’s widow ). The first consisted of 300 front feet on Ruie Road extending 2,800 feet due south, totaling some 19 acres. A dwelling house, barn and two out buildings are shown on this parcel. A second parcel directly across Ruie Road consisted of 700 front feet, with a due north depth 1,400 feet, some 23 acres. The house number of the property after it became part of the City of North Tonawanda was 1140 Ruie Rd.

Ludwig’s Will mentioned the purchase of two parcels. The first in 1869 and the second in 1876, which would not be reflected in the 1875 States Census. The legal description reflected in Ludwig’s Will are; Town of Wheatfield being Township and 8th Range and nearer described in a Deed given by Barnhard Messing & wife to this testator, and dated November 24th 1869, recorded in Niagara County Clerk’s Office on the 24th day of January, 1870 in Liber 119 of Deeds page 94; and my Deed given by Augustus Duckwitz & wife to testator dated the First day of May 1876 in Liber 77 page 170

The American Home

It is likely that the Doebler family came directly from New York City to the Town of Wheatfield, which had a large Prussian population. Many of these German families had immigrated from the same geographical area in Prussia. Ludwig’s Will indicates that he purchased his first parcel of land on Ruie Road on November 24th 1869, from Barnhard Messing & wife.

The 1870 Federal Census, finds the Doebler family residing in the Town of Wheatfield, Niagara County, NY. The family was enumerated in July 1870, dwelling house number in order of visitation 418, family Number in order of visitation 446. Martinsville is listed as their Post Office. The census lists Ludwig as Dubler, Chs, age 55, Farmer, Dorathea, 50 years old, House Keeping, William, 20 and Charles,14. Their Real Estate Value was $ 2,500 and Personal Property was valued at $ 800. The census seems to depict an established farm stead with a family comfortably in residence. Most likely Ludwig and family lived on this first 20 acre farm, making improvements prior to the 1869 closing.

Doebler Family's Home Town in Prussia

Both of Ludwig and Dorothea’s sons William F. and Carl ( Charles) G. were born in Rossow. We assume that the Doebler’s lived in Rossow from at least 1850, which was the year of William’s birth until 1867, which was the year of their immigration to the USA. In 2007 this area was referred to as Rossow Uecker-Randow, Mecklenburg-West Pommerania, Germany and is located about 7 mile east of Pasewalk and 3 miles north of Bergholz.
